THE HILL: GOP Plans ‘America Speaking Out’ Event

By Molly K. Hooper

House GOP leaders have planned a high-profile event at Washington D.C.’s Newseum Tuesday morning to launch the start of their “America Speaking Out” project.

Chief Deputy Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is in charge of the initiative to result in the release of a set of policy items that Republicans would pursue if they won back control of the House in November.

According to officials involved in the effort, “America Speaking Out” will focus on gathering feedback from Americans on what items that lawmakers should be focusing on in the future.

GOP Conference Chairman Mike Pence (Ind.) said on Monday “it’s part of a process of engaging Americans.”

Pence added that the project was not a product of the National Republican Congressional Committee.

“’America Speaking Out’ is not a project of the political” campaign arm, Pence said. He refrained from going into further detail.

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) tasked McCarthy with heading the effort to produce a list of policy changes similar to the successful “Contract with America” that Republicans used in 1994 to win control of the House and the Senate.

The Repubs ned to to some homework first. eg.

    1. Publish to the media ALL amendments submitted to congressional programs (such as Cap and Trade, healthcare etc) along with the final vote. The Amendment can be a synopsis. But, must be done within 24 hrs of submission, and/or vote. We desperately need this information so that we can demonstrate that the Repubs are not just saying no, but are providing constructive ideas and these votes will demobstrate that the Dems are voting NO!!!

    2. Then the items on The Contract have to have some meat in them, even though it will give the opposition some meat to chew on. We can’t use the words like reform. without providing a list of specific changes and objectives. Reform is too general. We have been bitten by this generality big time by the Dems.

    3. We need a way to accomplish our goals. We know that it will be difficlut to get thru congress. So, we must find an avenue that we can actually make happen. Maybe executive orders? Maybe repeated proposals? I don’t know. But we shouldn’t committ to things we can’t get done or we will be a one term party just like the Dems. One thing we might be able to do is block funding.
